Fast Company, one of the world’s leading business media brands, has released its 2023 World Changing Ideas Awards, which recognizes The Dyrt with an honorable mention in the apps category. The Dyrt is the No. 1 app for camping information and booking and one of only 10 apps honored by the very competitive awards program with hundreds of applicants.

“The Dyrt was created to close the information gap around camping and help more people enjoy nature,” says The Dyrt founder Sarah Smith. “Our community has contributed more than eight million reviews, photos and tips for some two million campsites across 50,000 properties. Everyone who has helped make The Dyrt such a truly comprehensive camping resource shares in this ‘World Changing Ideas’ recognition.”

This year, The Dyrt has taken its commitment to accessibility of camping to a new level. 
The Dyrt Alerts help campers get reservations at sold-out campgrounds since many of the most iconic and desirable places to camp fill up quickly. The Dyrt also launched a curated collection of 5,000 free camping locations, all of which are accessible by car.

Now in its seventh year, World Changing Ideas honors companies across a wide range of industries that “represent the kind of innovation and ingenuity necessary to make the world more accessible, equitable, and sustainable for everyone.” The apps category in which The Dyrt is recognized is open to mobile apps of all types, and honorees this year include apps promoting food security, voter registration, childhood education and more.

The Dyrt launched its app in 2017 and both its user community and the activity of camping in general have grown consistently every year since. That growth dramatically accelerated in 2020 when pandemic restrictions led millions of people to discover or rediscover the joys of camping.

The Dyrt’s 
2023 Camping Report found that 15 million Americans camped for the first time since 2021. Private camping has expanded amid very strong demand for campsites and The Dyrt has facilitated this growth by offering commission-free bookings to property owners who host campers via The Dyrt, as well as discounts on private camping for The Dyrt PRO members.

“Experiencing the outdoors is such an important and rewarding part of being human,” says Smith, who has previously 
written for Fast Company about how a career in international education prepared her to found a startup. “Using technology to help people overcome barriers to getting outside is somewhat ironic, but I can’t imagine building an app to do anything else.”
